Summer Conditioning Camp

In addition to the regular season Aquatics Teams, we have established a quality summer program for our athletes to condition, practice and improve their skills in preparation for the upcoming season.  This “camp” style format focuses on athletes from Beginner to Varsity, and the skills taught include swimming techniques, ball handling and skill development for our water polo athletes, and an overall strength and conditioning program for our athletes to remain competitive and enthusiastic about participating in their particular sport.

This program is NOT mandatory in order to participate in the regular-season sport.  It is, however, highly encouraged and recommended for any athlete that is serious about his/her commitment to their improvement as an athlete, as well to the improvement of our teams here at school.  Please note that there will be tryouts for the Boys and Girls teams at the beginning of the semester.  Athletes who are in better shape and who have more experience about the game of Water Polo will have a better chance of making their respective teams.

For our beginning athletes, this camp offers an opportunity to meet new friends, learn the rules and standards of the particular sport, and get a head start on the regular season.  At the high school level, the coaches want to be able to offer the opportunity for all of our athletes to participate in contests against other schools; however, high school athletics also has an important focus on competition and building successful athletes and programs.  Athletes who make the decision to begin their training and learning before the season starts have a great advantage over those who do not.

For our varsity-hopeful athletes, a summer conditioning and training program of some type is mandatory, if not with the program offered here at Burroughs.  Please note that a Varsity-level athlete is expected to fulfill all of the following requirements if they wish to be considered for the Varsity team:

-An approved weight-training program throughout the summer and during the school year.
-An approved conditioning program that emphasizes skills, conditioning and high levels of competition.
-A consistent level of participation in tournaments and games to prepare for the regular season.
-A consistent and committed level of participation in practices and team events.

When choosing our Varsity athletes for the upcoming season, all of these factors will be taken into consideration.  Athletes who participate in our summer camp and commit themselves to playing year-round will have a significantly greater chance of making the Varsity team when the season begins.

JBHS Aquatics Summer Camp 2013

Practices will be held at Burroughs. Please be sure that athletes are bringing the correct sportswear and are on time and ready to train at the designated times.

Practice times for Summer Camp (June 17th – July 25th, 4th of July off)
Varsity Monday - Thursday 8am-12pm

JV Monday - Thursday 1pm-4pm

***Lockers are available for athletes who wish to leave their practice wear on campus.

Tournament Schedule:

Tournaments take place on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the summer at various locations. These tournaments are for experienced water polo players – do not worry about these if you are a 1st year player unless you have been given a specific invite from a coach.

Please note the following regarding transportation to practice and tournaments:
*A phone list and email contact list will be put out the first week of practice to encourage parents to carpool whenever possible.

*For our tournaments, it is the athlete’s responsibility to find transportation to the tournaments on weekends. The coaches will assist whenever possible, but the parents must share the responsibility of participating in and supporting these tournaments. We have had some unlucky situations where assumptions were made about who was driving to a tournament, and we never made it to that tournament. Our fees were forfeited and the athletes were very frustrated, in addition to not being invited back by the host school.

Cost of the camp: $295
(includes 6 weeks program plus aquatics tank top)

(This does not include a mandatory $55 Silver member fee for joining USA water polo to participate in summer tournaments. Parents need to sign up for this individually and provide us with the member number. ONLY if you are a returning water polo player with tournament experience)

*Payment plans are available for students who experience financial hardships. It is the parents’ and
athlete’s responsibility to speak with Coach Garcia to set up an appropriate payment plan.
All students participating in the camp will receive a T- shirt as part of their summer dues.
